Need recommendation for 3 books by one author or same theme with literary merit?

For an AP English class this year, my son has to read three books by the same author or with the same theme. The books have to have literary merit, meaning no Jurassic Park/Harry Potter stuff. Some examples are F. Scott Fitzgerald or Charles Dickens, but the authors don’t need to be famous or well known. I was wondering if you could recommend any novels or any authors to me that fit this criteria. It would be great if you could respond with the novel, author, brief description, and why you like it.
