What is a high standing, interesting, readable book by an English author?

I would prefer a somewhat short book

We read Animal Farm freshman year so we’re not allowed to read that.

I love the books by Tess Gerritsen and I have read all of the ones except for the romance novels. My favorites are those in her Maura Isles and Jane Rizzoli series.
