Mei asked:

purposefully devoid of any metaphor or analogy -so for eg…when the author writes about a long-distance runner, all he/she is writing about IS the runner, –it doesnt have some bigger meaning (like the race of life) or anything.
are there any writers that were renouned to write like that?

(meaning an actual personal letter, not form letter, written by the actual author to you personally)
I once wrote Susanna Kaysen and she actually wrote me back on a typewriter. She answered the questions I asked and signed her name. Any others?

<3 asked:

I have to do a presentation on Young Goodman Brown and I need to describe the stylistic qualities of Hawthorne….I’m pretty sure he’s not a realist or naturalist, so is he a romanticist? And do you know of any other stylistic qualities he has? Doesn’t he use complex diction and syntax also? And I’m not sure, but is he considered a gothic author? Thanks!

Kelly asked:

Does anyone know the title and author of a young adult book about a boy who ingests a pill-sized computer that he believes will help him get what he wants?

It’s part of a word scramble, and if you need it I can post the letters. But I’m hoping someone will know anyway because they have heard of it/read it.

Thanks in advance for your help. =)

How explicitly do you like the author to describe physical traits of the character in a book?

frzzld_1 asked:

For example…

– describe clearly (the author would put in all the basic attributes of the character, and include lots of detail: 14 year old female, 5′3″, blond, grey eyes, straight teeth, short spiky hair, broken pinky toe from a killer kickball game.)

– some detail (the author would put in most of the basic attributes and some detail: 14 yr old female, 5′3″, blonde, grey eyes, short spiky hair.)

– basic description only (14 yr old female, 5′3″, blonde, grey eyes)

–vague references (may indicate eye color here, hair color there, but very few details given)

Keep in mind these are just PHYSICAL references…you’d get to “know” the character as the story progresses.

My thesis advisor and I have different opinions about this, so I’m curious to see what other people prefer. Thanks for helping!
