What are some good questions I can ask about how an author writes?

ME asked:

I’m doing a book project for my school and we were told to imagine that we were having a conversation with the author and as we read particular passages, we are to question the way that the author writes.
Example questions: Why does he/ she provide particular details? Why does he/she use particular imagery? Why select particular diction? Why use a particular style of language?
I’m at a loss as to what to ask and i just need some general questions that I could ask.

I’m reading One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at the moment, and I’m thrilled with Ken Kesey. His writing style, at least so far, is exactly the kind I love. The imagery is wonderful.

Is there an author you’re happy to have discovered this year? Did you perhaps rediscover an author?

What is the title of the writing or novel where the author describes a train using imagery of a steel horse?

There was a passage during my SATs where we were required to read a passage and answer questions. The author was describing a train and compared it to a steel horse to emphasize power and speed. It was beautifully written and I want to know where it was from. Thanks! :)
